Three years before the Iranian Revolution, during the reign of the Shah, one of the most unusual incidents ever recorded in Middle Eastern skies took place. This wasn't just a mysterious light in the sky, it was a full-scale aerial encounter between the Iranian Air Force and an unidentified flying object (UFO), documented by military witnesses and radar data, and it drew the attention of the United States at the highest levels.
An Unusual Dawn Over Tehran
In the early hours of September 19, 1976, residents of Tehran began calling in reports of a strange, moving light in the sky. The Air Defense Control Center received multiple calls, all describing something unusual above the city. The skies were clear, ruling out misleading weather phenomena like lightning or clouds, and there were no scheduled flights at that hour. As a result, an F-4 Phantom fighter jet was dispatched to investigate.
Malfunctions on Approach
The aircraft, piloted by Lieutenant Yadi Nazeri, headed toward the reported location. But as he neared the object, all of the plane’s systems, communications, navigation, and radar, suddenly shut down. With no other option, the pilot turned back, and as soon as he moved away from the mysterious object, the systems returned to normal.
This alarming event prompted the base to immediately send a second jet, this time piloted by Major Parviz Jafari, one of the Iranian Air Force’s top pilots at the time.
Eyes on the Unknown
As Jafari approached the area, he was able to clearly track the object on radar, about 40 kilometers away. He later described it as a large craft—about the size of a jumbo jet—emitting lights that changed color: blue, red, orange, and green.
The closer Jafari got, the more he noticed disturbances in his instruments, though they didn’t completely fail at first. Suddenly, a smaller object shot out from the main craft and sped toward his jet. Believing it to be a missile, Jafari attempted to fire an air-to-air missile in response, but his weapons system and communications both failed at that critical moment.
After a tense few moments, the smaller object changed course and moved away from the jet without causing any harm.
The Mysterious Landing of a Glowing Object
As Jafari was withdrawing, he noticed another object separate from the main craft, appearing to descend toward the ground rather than crash. There was no explosion; instead, it seemed to land gently, glowing on the ground for several minutes before disappearing.
The next morning, Jafari and another crew conducted a reconnaissance flight by helicopter over the area south of Tehran where the object was believed to have landed. They found no physical evidence. However, some villagers nearby reported hearing a loud noise and seeing a bright flash in the sky that night.
Official Reports Reach Washington
What stands out about this incident is that the United States received official reports through its military attaché in Tehran. A detailed account was sent to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which classified it as significant information and circulated it to top-level authorities, including:
the White House, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Department of Defense (the Pentagon).
The report described the event as an exceptional case, highlighting it as one of the most credible UFO sightings due to the convergence of pilot testimonies, radar tracking, electronic malfunctions, and the matching timelines reported by both aircraft.
What does the pilot himself think?
Years later, Major Parviz Jafari participated in international conferences on the UFO phenomenon, maintaining that what he encountered that night was not man-made, but rather a flying entity with technology far beyond anything he had seen in his military career.
In one interview, Jafari said:
"Our instruments shut down as we approached it, and came back online when we moved away. It moved intelligently and seemed to know we were trying to engage it. I had never seen anything like it before, and I doubt I ever will again."
Attempts to Explain... But
After news of the incident spread, some tried to offer more conventional explanations. A few astronomers suggested the pilots may have mistaken Jupiter for a moving object. Others attributed the malfunctions to technical issues that occasionally affected F-4 jets.
However, most analysts couldn't account for the smaller object separating from the main craft, the selective disabling of only the attack systems (but not navigation), or the way the smaller object moved toward the jet and then suddenly retreated.
Did something from another world visit us?
The 1976 Tehran incident remains one of the most intriguing and mysterious UFO cases in history. It stands out for its credible military witnesses, radar evidence, electronic disruptions, and official U.S. documentation—making it far more than just folklore or an astronomical misidentification.
